URGENT LEGISLATIVE ALERT

Ontario, Canada Bill Threatens
Motor Vehicle Performance, Functional and Styling Equipment

The Ontario, Canada Ministry of Transportation has introduced legislation (Bill 241) containing a provision (Section 172.2) to ban certain automotive parts, substances and equipment that the Ministry claims are used in street racing. This measure is primarily directed at equipment that boosts engine performance (most notably nitrous oxide), but could result in the ban or limitation of a range of motor vehicle equipment, including functional and styling equipment on all types of vehicles. Under the measure, regulations would be issued designating substances, parts and equipment covered under the ban.

SEMA Urges You to Write, Call, Fax or E-Mail Your
Members of the Ontario Provincial Parliament
Immediately to Oppose This Bill

Bill 241 (Section 172.2) ignores the fact that most performance equipment is designed to make vehicles run more efficiently without increasing emissions.

Bill 241 (Section 172.2) is purposely vague and does not supply regulators with a clear standard to enforce, allowing them to make subjective and arbitrary judgments on whether or not a specific piece of equipment should be banned.

Bill 241 (Section 172.2) fails to recognize that certain performance equipment can make a vehicle safer by improving its ability to merge, pass, travel uphill, etc.

Bill 241 (Section 172.2) would make it difficult for hobbyists to replace factory equipment with more durable, better performing options.

Bill 241 (Section 172.2) makes the erroneous assumption that enthusiasts who equip their vehicles with aftermarket parts are involved in illegal street racing and would unfairly restrict their right to personalize their vehicles.

Write, call, fax or e-mail your own members of the Ontario Provincial Parliament immediately to oppose this legislation. This bill tramples on the rights of vehicle enthusiasts and related businesses in Ontario. If you need assistance in determining who your MPP's are, please contact the Ontario Provincial Parliament's Information Line at 1-800-677-8683 or link on to this information at Electoral Districts
