The national Lincoln Highway Association
with assistance from Lincoln-Mercury, Auto Appraisal Group and Grundy Insurance,
kicks of a 3300 mile tour on the historic Lincoln Highway from New York to San
Francisco. The tour commemorates the 90th anniversary of the road’s
inception and the 75th Anniversary of its dedication. The Lincoln Highway, is
America’s first trans-continental highway.
The event started at Times Square in New
York City Sunday, August 17, 2003. Over 60 vehicles of all types from; antique,
classic, street rod, sports cars, trucks, and modern cars are making the
journey. Several of the latest Lincoln vehicles will be on the tour as well.
The group heads west over as many of the
original Lincoln Highway alignments as possible, approximately 225 miles
per day, with stops in 13 of the original Lincoln Highway states: New York, New
Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska,
Wyoming, Utah, Nevada and California. The group is hosted by six prominent auto
museums along the way.
This tour of a lifetime concludes in San
Francisco’s Lincoln Park with a ceremony honoring the mile marker post setting
by the Boy Scouts of America that took place at the western terminus on
September 1, 1928.
Anniversary Tour participant Bernard
Queneau will be present for the dedication. “Bernie” was one of the original Boy
Scouts from the 1928 reconnaissance. This is his second crossing in 75 years!
Vehicles range from 1913 to 2003. Older
vehicles will set the pace with newer vehicles to the rear. Some of the over 125
participants will drop in and out of the tour as their time permits. Discounts
for lodging were arranged across the United States by sponsor, Chima Travel of
Fairlawn, Ohio.
There are celebrations at the kick off
location of Secaucus, New Jersey, the mid-point in Shelton, Nebraska, and at the
wrap up event in Emeryville, California. Other communities are planning picnics,
celebrations and historic tours for the group as they travel America. A new
Lincoln Town Car will pace the event, and a Lincoln Navigators will provide
logistical assistance along with a Timber Wolf trailer from Leonard’s Truck &
Trailers.
Useful guide books, shirts and other items
to commemorate the trip will be given to participants for this once in a life
time trip. Proceeds go to the national Lincoln Highway Association. State
chapters of the Lincoln Highway Association are assisting in the tour as hosts
and guides. Other Lincoln Highway heritage and byway groups are assisting, along
